What to Expect When You’re Expecting (a New Puppy)

Getting a puppy is an exciting time for everyone. It can feel like forever waiting for them to have all of their vaccinations so they can get out and about, but there are lots of things you can do while you wait to set them up for success later in life.

Socialisation

Socialisation is more than just meeting other dogs. Puppyhood is the perfect time to introduce a whole range of new experiences in a safe way. The key to making an experience positive is to go slow and give lots of rewards (like their favourite treat, toy or praise from you).

Other dogs

Meeting other dogs in a safe and controlled environment while they are young is really important for a puppy’s development. Puppy Preschool is a great way to do this, or by simply visiting friends and family with well-socialised dogs (as long as they are fully vaccinated and your pup has had at least one vaccination).

Car rides

Taking your pup for short car trips can help them become excellent travellers. Puppies will often experience motion sickness in cars, so keeping it short and sweet is important. As your pup’s confidence (and stomach strength) grows, you can increase the length of the trips. And remember to take them somewhere fun! If they only go to scary places (like the vet), they can start to see car trips as a bad thing.

Vet visits

Speaking of scary vet visits, there are some things you can do to make visiting us as stress-free as possible. Vaccinations are important, but we can all agree they’re not fun. If your puppy only comes in for injections, it’s understandable that they might become frightened. Bringing them in for a quick treat or cuddle between the scary appointments can help them feel more relaxed about their visits (plus you’ll brighten a nurse’s day!)

New people

The more people your puppy meets, the better! Having people in their space (AKA your house) can help to reduce territorial anxiety. That being said, they should always have a safe space available to retreat to if it all becomes a bit much.

Grooming

Getting your puppy used to having their paws touched and coat brushed can help when it comes to nail clipping and grooming later in life. It’s also a great time to introduce them to teeth brushing. Although their baby teeth will fall out, being comfortable with you touching their mouth will make taking care of their dental health much easier when their adult teeth come through.

Remember: Socialisation is an ongoing process. As your puppy grows, continue to expose them to new environments, experiences, and people. Consistency and patience are key and will help them thrive in all situations.
